Emmet Till Essay - 889 Words

Emmett Till was a young boy who lived in Chicago and was not used to all the racial issues in the South because he did not have to face them until he went to a small town in Mississippi to visit his relatives. He soon realized just how different the South really was. Emmett and a few friends went to a white-owned store, and on the way out he was dared by his friends to whistle at the white lady running the store. Later that day, he was taken from his uncles home by the ladys husband and was shot, beaten, and with a heavy weight tied to his neck, thrown in the Tallahatchie River (Emmett Till and the Impact of the Images, 2004). A few days later Tills body was found in the river. Urbanization Free Essays

Nowadays, with the fast development of economy of the world, many cities become bigger and bigger and many modern cities are appearing. Thus, we face the complex problem: Urbanization. Urbanization has been a subject of heated discussion for a long time. We will write a custom essay sample on Urbanization or any similar topic only for you Order Now Some people are in favor, while others are opposed. In my opinion, urbanization benefits human beings rather than do harm to them. Two reasons may account for my conclusion. Firstly, urbanization enriches our life. We can imagine what will happen without convenient traffic system, without big department stores, without KTVs and many other entertainments? To some extent, it is impossible for human beings to live in this world. Urbanization make it possible for us to enjoy our life more than before, Also, urbanization quicken the pace of science, especially in the communication field, in the early time, if we want to connect with our family members or friends, the only way we can choose is writing letters. But urbanization changed this situation, we can talk with the friends in the foreign countries with our any difficulties through the Internet, we gain whatever information we need on the internet. These conveniences are brought by the urbanization. Secondly, urbanization also raise our country economy. As we all know, the policy of Reform and Opening give our country a golden opportunity to develop our economy, we have a direct feeling about the dramatic increasing of our living standard, many productions that we cannot afford in the past time can be owned in today. This phenomenon proves that urbanization benefits our life basically. With the fast step of urbanization, many job opportunities are supplied in the occupation market which make many rural migrant workers get a solid work in the urban area. They also contribute to the economic development in the urban area. These prosperities are definitely brought by the urbanization. I live in Shanghai, and it is a typical big city in China. I found that we also have many negative sides of urbanization. For instance, we can talk to the friends thousands miles away, but we don’t know our neighbours in the high-rises; many migrant workers do not enjoy the same profits and rights as the permanent unban residents and this will make their living without and insurance system. But we don’t need to be so pessimistic of the situation at hand. It is evident that the advantages of urbanization outweigh the disadvantages. What we should do is to remain the positive side , meanwhile to conquer the negative side. Our government will also introduce many effective policies to narrow this contradictory. So we have enough reasons to believe the situation will become better and better so that we can reach our aim †better city, better life † ! How to cite Urbanization, Papers Urbanization Free Essays Answer arbitration will cause greenery to be lost. Arbitration involves the process of buildings new buildings and infrastructure, and trees and grasslands will have too be chopped down and removed to make space for the new buildings. In this case, the natural environment is lost. We will write a custom essay sample on Urbanization or any similar topic only for you Order Now Sometimes, construction will cause sand and dirt to circulate in the air, creating air pollution, while pollutants from construction sites may enter water bodies and cause water pollution. Even though some cities may try o restore its former greenery, it can never be compared to the previous natural landscape. Animal Shortage of Electric Power A very serious problem facing the entire country is the acute shortage of electric power both in urban and rural areas. This can be solved only by generating much more electricity than at present. However, this solution has met with almost a wall- like obstruction. Conventional methods of generation like coal based thermal power, nuclear power and hydro electric power are being opposed by people for reasons of environmental pollution, displacement of people submergence of land and forests etc. There are some gas based power stations which are less polluting but due to lack of sufficient quantity of natural gas they are working at less than half their load capacity. Non-conventional sources of power like solar power and wind power are not that economically viable or affordable by the consumers. The power generation Is also intermittent requiring large storage capacity for energy. One does not know what new problems will arise In storing energy on such large scale. Fee will also be greatly affected due to habitat loss. How to cite Urbanization, Papers Urbanization Free Essays The Effects of Urbanization on Downtown Louisville David Taylor Environmental Science Brown Mackie College Mark Dutrow September 20, 2012 Abstract As our cities become larger, more congested, and more urbanized we are beginning to start seeing some of the long term effects we are making on our urban environment. As we are becoming more aware of our pollution and measures to improve it, we can look back on systems of the past and see where they are negatively affecting our environment. Acid rain is the most noticeable since you can see the visible deterioration, unnatural discoloration, and erosion caused by the acid rain. We will write a custom essay sample on Urbanization or any similar topic only for you Order Now Another noticeable problem is the signs of chemicals that have been used to preserve monuments and lubricate other structures. If we don’t do something to correct the mistakes our ancestors made in the development and urbanization of Louisville and the surrounding areas, the next generation will have to spend millions if not billions of dollars to correct these errors. Why is Louisville here? Jefferson County was organized in 1780 and one of the first three counties formed out of the original Kentucky County, which was still part of Virginia at the time (the other two being Fayette and Lincoln). The county is named for Thomas Jefferson, who was governor of Virginia at the time. Downtown Louisville is the oldest part of the city of Louisville, whose initial development was closely tied to the Ohio River. The largest early fort, Fort Nelson, was built in 1781 near what is today the corner of 7th and Main streets. Many early residents lived nearby after moving out of the forts by the mid-1780s, although little remains from of the earliest (mostly wood) structures. Louisville became a popular stopping point for travelers on the Ohio River. Because of the falls of the Ohio and the rapids, boats had to stop, unload their cargo, traverse the rapids and then reload to continue their journey. With Louisville being located so close to the falls it grew into a bustling town catering to the travelers by opening several hotels and saloons. (www. hellolouisville. com/, n. d. ) How has development affected the environment in Louisville? People who live in urban areas have very different consumption patterns than residents in rural areas. 10 For example; urban populations consume much more food, energy, and durable goods than rural populations. With economic development, the difference in consumption declined as the rural populations ate better diets. Urban populations not only consume more food, but they also consume more durable goods. Energy consumption for electricity, transportation, cooking, and heating is much higher in urban areas than in rural areas. For example, urban populations have many more cars than rural populations per capita. Almost all of the cars in the world in the 1930s were in the United States. Today we have a car for every two people in the United States. If that became the norm, in 2050 there would be 5. billion cars in the world, all using energy. (http://www. prb. org/, n. d. ) In the downtown Louisville area, all of the rain runoff includes all of the fluids that have leaked out of the vehicles as well as the chemicals that are washed off of all the buildings. This contamination has caused pH of the Ohio to change which in turn limits the number of species of fish that can survive in the now con taminated water. The manmade structures we have put in the Ohio River are also contributing to this pH change. Steel piers and concrete pillars being the majority of these structures. How has pollution deteriorated downtown structures? One of the biggest negative affects is the deterioration of the buildings caused by acid rain. Another observation during the fieldtrip was the visible damage caused by chemicals used in joints of buildings as well as leaking from statues that were sealed so they won’t erode. Air pollution damages materials, especially those used in buildings because of their long service life, sometimes of the order of hundreds of years. Damage to other objects tends to be less important: most cars, for instance, are replaced long before damage from air pollution has become significant. The phenomena of the degradation of buildings are complex due to the numerous factors that intervene. However it is generally recognized that man-made pollutants have greatly increased the degradation rate of buildings. Of particular importance is soiling caused by particles (especially soot) and corrosion or erosion caused by SO2. (arirabl. org, n. d. ) What would downtown look like if Louisville had not been developed? The area would look totally different. The landscape would be serene with rolling hills, thousands of trees, natural flow of the river, and natural flow of creeks feeding into the Ohio River. The power plant as well as the lock and dam wouldn’t be obstructing the Ohio. The wooded area would be teeming with wildlife and the river would be stocked with several species of fish that don’t occupy it today. Which natural disasters is the downtown area prepared for? Downtown Louisville is prepared for a couple of natural disasters. Some natural disasters are not common to the area such as, hurricane’s, mudslides, volcano’s, and tsunami’s. However, floods, tornado’s, and earthquake’s are common to the Louisville area. The downtown area has prepared for flooding by elevating most all of the buildings to a height above the 1937 flood depth. There is also a flood wall that has been put into place to keep water from destroying majority of the city. The buildings in the downtown area have also been designed or retro fitted to withstand the wind velocity associated with tornados. However, the downtown area is not prepared for a strong earthquake. Even though Louisville is on the New Madrid Fault the cost associated with making all structures reinforced enough to withstand a strong earthquake is too great. Effect of Management Accounting Practices on Financial Performance

Question: Discuss about the Effect of Management Accounting Practices on Financial Performance of Manufacturing Firm. Answer: Introduction The current segment explains effects of management accounting practices on essentially the financial performance of the manufacturing firm Adelaide Brighton. The current section explains the background literature, different theories of management accounting, significant management accounting practices, and important components of financial performance of firms. In particular, the review of academic literature presents details of financial performance of firm, practices in Management Accounting and financial performance of firm with special orientation to the operations of Adelaide Brighton. Background Literature As rightly indicated by Kaplan and Atkinson (2015), management accounting can be considered as a process of accumulation of enumeration, recognition, evaluation, preparation, analysis and communication of significant information that again aids management in meeting the objectives of the organization and business decision making. Management accounting essentially delivers opportunity for corporations to partake in the market in a bid to offer superior quality products as well as services at affordable prices to all consumers. Important theories of management accounting The current segment essentially presents two different theories of management accounting. Particularly, this include the contingency theory of essentially management accounting whilst the other theory is that is the new institutional sociology theory. As rightly indicated by Simons (2013), the contingency theory of management accounting discusses the reason behind unalike or else dissimilar management accounting practices specifically at the time of carrying out comparison between one business firm to the other. However, this can be associated to the business firms functioning in diverse industries or else sectors. Fullerton et al. (2014) implemented contingency theory to diverse management accounting practices and illustrated that there does not exist any generic standard management accounting practice that can be implemented to all the business concerns. Essentially, each and every business concern might have their own management accounting exercise. Lavia Lpez and Hiebl (2014) asserts that management accounting practices are widely utilized in diverse manufacturing firms and the favoured practices include budgeting for controlling costs along with analysis of performance of organization. Analysis of findings divulges the fact t hat budgeting plays a very significant role in the process of handling as well as directing procedures of business concerns. This in turn helps the managers to understand the costs that are expected in the upcoming budgeted period and provides an indication regarding seasonal alterations in the corporation and the impact it can exert on the cash flows as well as revenues of the corporation. This is why management accounting practices are preferred over other exercises. In addition to this, budgeting also helps corporations to effectually plan and at the same time formulate appropriate strategies for achievement of goals (Fullerton et al. 2013). As rightly put forward by Soin and Collier (2013), the theory of New Institutional Sociology (NIS) was essentially developed after a series of different observations made particularly during the year 1970. The main argument of NIS is that there are certain corporations that operate in an institutionalised environment. In particular, the institutionalized business concerns have a tendency to adopt framework as well as that are essentially valued in social as well as cultural environment of the business concern. This might help the organizations in the process of achievement of legitimacy and assist in securing diverse resources that are vital for the survival of the firms. Lafond et al. (2016) argue that business concerns are very strategic in their reaction to different institutional pressures that are imposed on these firms. The firms might decisively adhere to directives or else assume explicit formal framework as well as procedures, and carry out the same in a very manipulative ma nner in a bid to acquire legitimacy and in that way secure different resources on which the firms rest on. Management Accounting Practices Management accounting practices also assists a corporation to thrive in the competitive, ever-transforming world as this delivers a significant competitive advantage for a corporation that guides managerial activities, motivates human behaviours, upholds as well as creates cultural values essential for achievement of strategic objectives of an organization. Management accounting is essentially apprehensive regarding internal requirements of management. The process orients around analysis of performance as well as formulation of estimation of upcoming period set against conventional financial accounting. This can stresses the need for historical data associated to legal financial matters such as ownership, investment, acquirement of credit, process of taxation, directives as well as building of foundations for consistent as well as traditional external reportage. As rightly indicated by Carlsson-Wall et al. (2015), flexibility can be regarded as an important feature of management acco unting as it presupposes that cautious attention has been provided to determine the significant requirements of management, many among them cannot be accurately recognized beforehand. Alsharari et al. (2015) assets that management accounting can be defined as a procedure of recognition, enumeration, accumulation, interpretation, preparation as well as communication of particular financial information utilized by management to plan, assess and maintain control within a particular corporation. This can also help in the process of ensuring appropriate use of and accountability for resources. Essentially, management accounting essentially consists of preparation of financial declarations for non-management classes such as shareholders of the firm, creditors, regulatory organisations as well as tax establishments. Also, management accounting also delivers information from essentially the environment to management to boost the process of business decision making. In itself, proper management accounting information has essentially three different attributes, namely, technical, behavioural and cultural. Arena et al. (2015) opines that technical attributes helps in the process of enhancement of understanding of the overall phenomenon enumerated and delivers pertinent information concerning strategic decisions. However, behavioural attributes encourages different actions that are consistent with the strategic objectives of the organization. In addition to this, the cultural attributes indicates towards the support and generates a particular set of shared cultural values, belief s along with mind-sets in a particular corporation and community. However, the development of management accounting is essentially responsive to varied demands of necessarily the management as well as environment. Gold et al. (2016) opines that management accounting can acclimatize to different organizational transformations and three main forces that can cause corporations to evolve, namely, technological alterations, globalization and needs of the customers. Again, in a bid to remain competitive in the market, business have the need to continuously improve. Owing to this, management needs to use different established management accounting tools as well as techniques. Elements of financial performance in particularly manufacturing organization Adelaide Brighton Examination of different determinants of particularly financial performance is important for the stakeholders of the firm Adelaide Brighton, but particularly for investors of the corporation. Adelaide Brighton also simply referred to as ABC is essentially an Australian manufacturing firm that produces cement, lime as well as different dry blended products. The corporation ABC essentially operates through different manufacturing as well as distribution facilities across different parts of South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales among many others (Adbri.com.au 2017). In itself, the overall value of specific shareholders, that is referred to as market value of the Adelaide Brighton is highly dependent on numerous facets. Essentially, the factors include present profitability of the Adelaide Brighton, diverse risks faced, and growth of the economy that is vital for earnings of the corporation. These can be considered as the major factors that can exert influence on the overall mark et value of manufacturing organization Adelaide Brighton. However, Simons (2013) argue that different financial indicators grounded on specific accounting information can be considered to be adequate for determination of overall value of the shareholders of the firm Adelaide Brighton. Particularly, financial performance of manufacturing corporations are essentially influenced by the specific market position of the corporation. In itself, profitability of the corporation Adelaide Brighton can essentially be decomposed in to different components such as net turnover along with net profit margin. As per Arena et al. (2015), both the components can exert influence on the overall profitability of the firm at one point of time (Adbri.com.au 2017). As correctly put forward by Arena et al. (2015), risk as well as growth can be considered to be two very significant factors that might influence the overall financial performance of manufacturing firm. As the market value of the firms are essentially conditioned by the financial results of Adelaide Brighton, the degree as well as the level of risk exposure can lead to alterations in the overall market value. In addition to this, the economic growth can be regarded as another important element that can assist in the process of attainment of better position in different financial markets as market value takes into account anticipated profits in the upcoming period. Again, the size of the firm can also have a very positive impact on the overall financial performance as larger corporations can utilize this specific advantage to acquire certain financial gains in specific business relations. Essentially, large sized firms have get easier admittance to vital factors of production, countin g human resources of the firm. Nevertheless, current studies contradict the current idea and put forward the argument that capital structure essentially plays a significant role in the process of determination of performance of a firm. In itself, the business entities that have higher rates of profits tend to remain low leveraged owing to their capability to fund their own sources. Contrarily, higher degree of leverage again enhanced the risk of liquidation or else bankruptcy of different firms. However, the total assets of a firm can positively exert influence on the overall financial performance of the corporation. In this case, large amount of sales is also not correlated with enhanced performance. Prior studies also indicates towards the fact that the association between turnover and the overall corporate performance can be considered to be inconclusive (Arena et al. 2015). For instance, companies listed under stock exchanges can be considered to have stable financial positive i f they are able to distribute higher dividends. However, there hs been a remarkable shift owing to innovations in different management accounting practices. However, this is apparent from the adoption of different innovative management accounting mechanisms such as use of activity based costing, adoption of strategic management accounting, lifecycle costing system, implementation of just in time (JIT) along with other contemporary performance evaluations mechanisms such as balance score card. Financial performance of the firm Adelaide Brighton Financial performance can be referred to as a subjective measure that shows the manner a particular corporation can utilize assets from the primary approach of business and generate revenues. Essentially, the concept of performance enumeration concept refers towards the fact that workforce can augment the overall firms value by augmenting the overall size of a corporations cash flows in the upcoming period, by quickening the cash flow receipts, or else by ensuring more certainty or else less chancy. Financial performance of a firm is essentially determined by different indicators such as profit or else value additions, revenues from sales, budget, and costs or else expends along with indicators of stock market. Proxies for particularly financial performance include different measures of performance, key financial ratio such as Return on Assets (ROA) as well as Return on Equity (ROE) (Tanc and Gokoglan 2015). Analysis of financial statements of the company Adelaide Brighton for the years (2016, 2015 and 2014) of the firm Adelaide Brighton reveals the fact that return on assets (ROA in %) was recorded to be 10.17 in 2016, 11.39 in 2015, and 10.02 in 2014. Again, the return on equity enumerated based on the financial declarations of the firm is recorded to be 15.38% in 2016, 17.78% in 2015 and 15.75% in 2014. The two different financial ratio enumerated that is ROA and ROE can be considered to be good measure of profitability of the firm Adelaide Brighton. There are other key financial ration that can help in understanding the solvency, as well as liquidity condition of the firm. Appropriate management accounting practices can therefor help in understanding the precise financial condition of the firm by proper assessment of financial pronouncements of the firm. Therefore, these practices can help in understanding the gaps in performance and assume steps that can help in overcoming the perfo rmance gaps in order to achieve the organizational objectives of the firm Adelaide Brighton Practices in Management Accounting and financial performance of firm As rightly put forward by Chiwamit et al. (2014), different practices of management accounting essentially for manufacturing businesses can support infrastructure of a corporation and different management accounting procedures. Particularly, management accounting exercises comprise of analysis of performance, appropriate budgeting, sharing of information for business decision making, analysis of business strategy and many others. Brandau et al. (2013) argue that owing to development of novel mechanisms, fundamental principles of management accounting has altered to form a better one that in turn can add value to different practices. Brandau et al. (2013) opines that academic literature also points out towards certain exercises namely, absorption costing as well as marginal costing that are highly preferred by different firms. Management accounting practices essentially help in enabling management to acquire pertinent information for significant decision making. Gold et al. (2016) adv ocates that the perceived importance of particularly cost accounting can be properly driven by lessening profitability, escalating cost along with competition, together with world economic crisis. It can be noted in this connection that there are firm that perceive traditional management accounting instruments over the new management accounting exercises that include strategic planning as well as transfer pricing. Just the same manner Marlow idolizes Kurtz. Marlow is physical position symbolizes Buddha. Marlow is different from the remainder of the riders. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; He had sunken cheeks, a xanthous skin color, a consecutive back, an ascetic facet, and, with his weaponries dropped, the thenar of custodies outwards, resembled an idol. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Architect # 8221 ; [ storyteller ( Conrad ) to the reader 3 ] The reader has been told of the Nellie traveling down the Thames to the centre of the Earth, but the ship has stalled or held back by the tides. This makes the riders captives of the narrative that is about to blossom from Marlow # 8217 ; s lips. This compares with Rime of the Ancient Mariner, in that the seaman mesmerized the nuptials invitee with his interior journey on the outer seas. Charlie Marlow is inspired by the darkness of the environing ships of war to abjure his journey to the Congo. The storyteller says that most mariners have merely narratives, but non Marlow. Marlow # 8217 ; s narratives are like the manner a Russian nesting doll works, open the doll and there is another doll indoors. The significance and the characters are in the environing beds of the intended finish, Kurtz and the Congo. This gives us the construction of Marlow # 8217 ; s narrative telling-his bequest. Quotation mark: # 821 6 ; But Marlow was non typical ( if his leaning to whirl yarns be expected ) , and to him the significance of an episode was non inside like a meat but outside, enfolding the narrative? # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Visionary # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders of the Nellie 3 ] The storyteller is stating of the past travellers of the Thames # 8216 ; the dark # 8220 ; intruders # 8221 ; of Eastern trade, and the commissioned # 8220 ; generals # 8221 ; of East India fleets # 8217 ; . Fortune searchers and vanquishers of times before are related to the tusk trading and powering over the indigens of the Congo. The Sun is puting the mention of the coming of a dark tainted journey. Speaking of the Thames, Marlow calls it merely one of the dark topographic points. He is giving an debut to his narrative of the Congo. The vision of the Thames as one of the dark topographic points is that in the terminal the dark shadow of Kurtz still follows him even to Kurtz # 8217 ; s intended # 8217 ; s topographic point through the prevarication of Kurtz # 8217 ; s last words, her name. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; # 8221 ; And this besides, # 8221 ; said Marlow all of a sudden, # 8220 ; has been one of the dark topographic points of the earth. # 8221 ; # 8216 ; # 8220 ; Loner # 8221 ; [ storyteller to reader 3 ] Marlow has merely spoken about the Thames-one of the topographic points of darkness. Merely as the antediluvian seaman was destined to take his fatal journey entirely so is Marlow. Marlow journeys into himself and wanders the sea unlike the other mariners who have land bound places. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; He was the lone adult male of us who still # 8220 ; followed the sea. # 8221 ; # 8216 ; # 8220 ; Rebel # 8221 ; [ storyteller to the reader 4 ] Marlow is stating the riders to grok the journey of a immature Rome conquer garbed in merely a toga forcing inland to the savageness of the centre. Parallel to Marlow # 8217 ; s journey to the Congo armed with merely his good moral purposes of breaking the indigens. Marlow is prophesying to the riders, but is in a brooding place. His English frock and Buddha demeanor struggle in a rebellious province of contrast with their position norms. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; he had the airs of a Buddha sermon in European apparels and without a Nelumbo nucifera flower # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Avant-garde # 8221 ; [ Marlow to the riders of the Nellie 6 ] Marlow since his young person wanted to research the chartless land of the Congo. When younger the map had nil on it, but now there was the serpent of the river that had charmed him. Conrad is paralleled with Marlow in his dream to be a mariner. Marlow had at first tried to procure a occupation on a ship to the Congo on his ain but was unsuccessful. He had ever done things on his ain power and virtue. Now, for the first clip in his life he had to enroll the adult females to act upon a certain trading society to acquire the occupation he so urgently wanted. He calls upon his aunt who does his command. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; I, Charlie Marlow, set the adult females to work-to acquire a job. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Conformist # 8221 ; [ Marlow to the riders of the Nellie 23 ] Marlow is at the cardinal station. The brickmaker is giving him some penetration into Kurtz. The brickmaker, who doesn # 8217 ; Ts make bricks, is unwittingly stating Marlow that the director is seeking to free himself of Kurtz by pretermiting him. The director fears that Kurtz # 8217 ; s would steal his occupation, because of Kurtz # 8217 ; s gifted endowment of geting tusk. Marlow merely has an ideal of Kurtz, like a kind of faith set around the image. Marlow has been engulfed by the worship of Kurtz that he would lie for him. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; I would non hold gone so far as to contend for Kurtz, but I went for him nigh plenty to a lie. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Judge # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders on the Nellie 23 ] Marlow doesn # 8217 ; t really lie to the brickmaker he merely lets him believe what he wants in respects to the influence that brought Marlow at that place to salvage Kurtz. Marlow Judgess a prevarication to be shocking. Ironically, at the terminal of the fresh Marlow lies to Kurtz # 8217 ; s intended to save her feelings and he believes Kurtz to hold wanted it that manner. Marlow is judging the prevarication and his future actions. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; you know I hate, detest, and can # 8217 ; t bear a prevarication, non because I am straighter than the remainder of us, but merely because it appalls me. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Critic # 8221 ; [ Marlow to the riders of the Nellie 46 ] Marlow # 8217 ; s steersman has died in the onslaught on the soft-shell clam. Marlow feels that if the steersman hadn # 8217 ; t opened the shutter and panicked by hiting out at the shrub he would still be alive. Marlow compares the steersman with Kurtz in the manner he was unable to contend off the steeping darkness of greed. The steersman showed none of the restraint in the state of affairs that he had shown in his control of cannibal hungry. Quote: # 8216 ; He had no restraint, no restraint-just like Kurtz. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Caregiver # 8221 ; [ Marlow to the riders of the Nellie 46 ] Marlow is depicting Kurtz after the decease of the steersman. Marlow can # 8217 ; t show that Kurtz is worth the blood spilled on his places. Marlow humanizes the steersman, who is a native, when he says that they had a bond. He took attention of the steersman by guarding his dorsum while the steersman steered for him. Marlow gives the steersman an English self-respect with a seaman type entombment to forestall the devastation of his organic structure for nutrient. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; He steered for me-I had to look after him. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Director # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders of the Nellie 47 ] The steersman # 8217 ; s decease has sparked talk among the man-eaters of eating his remains. Marlow feels that by maintaining the organic structure it will merely take down the restraint of the crew. He takes control of the state of affairs by throwing the organic structure over the side of the boat. He is thought to be heartless in this act, but genuinely he is continuing the self-respect of the steersman and the control of the ship # 8217 ; s crew. The volatile state of affairs of contending for the remains is neutralized as it is enveloped in the river. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; He had been a really mediocre steersman while alive, but now he was dead he might hold become a excellent enticement, and perchance do galvanizing trouble. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Jester # 8221 ; [ Marlow to red-haired pilgrim 47 ] The red-haired pilgrim said that they must hold made a slaughter in the shrub. Basically all the adult male did was shoot aimlessly at the tops of the trees. The adult male is hiking and Marlow makes a gag of the adult male # 8217 ; s nescient pride. The lone thing they accomplished was to do a fume screen over the river. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; You made a glorious batch of fume, anyhow. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Dreamer # 8221 ; [ Marlow to the riders of the Nellie 51 ] Marlow has made if to Kurtz # 8217 ; s cantonment, and has met the Russian who # 8217 ; s campsite he found before. At the campground Marlow believes the adult male to be English because he mistakes the Russian alphabet for cypher. There was besides a warning write to be careful from this point on. Marlow is listening to the Russian describing Kurtz, when the jungle draws him off from the current world, the narrative and that minute in the narrative. The jungle is sucking him into the solitariness and darkness. Marlow is experiencing a minute of failing, which is why he is spiritually lifted out of that minute in clip to the dark deferrals of the jungle bosom. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; I looked about, and I don # 8217 ; Ts know why, but I assure you that neer, neer earlier did this land, this river, this jungle, the really arch of this blaze sky, appear to me so hopeless and so dark, so impenetrable to human ide a, so remorseless to human weakness. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Fanatic # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders of the Nellie 53 ] Marlow has discovered that the fencing he thought encircled Kurtz # 8217 ; s cantonment is non a fencing at all, but caputs on bets. This realisation makes Marlow entranced with them. He is fixated on there visual aspect and goes into sedate item. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; I returned intentionally to the first I had seen- # 8217 ; Kurtz # 8220 ; Deviant # 8221 ; [ Brickmaker to Marlow 22 ] Marlow is talking with the brickmaker of the cardinal station. The brick shaper has a picture of a adult female draped and blindfolded transporting a lighted torch. Marlow inquires about the picture and is told Kurtz painted the drab image. Marlow wants to cognize who Kurtz is. # 8216 ; Chief of the interior station # 8217 ; replies the brickmaker. Marlow wants more so e is sarcastic with the adult male # 8216 ; you are the brickmaker # 8217 ; . The brickmaker must profess that Kurtz is and extraordinary adult male, non merely a simple rubric, but a alone person. Quotation mark: ‘He is a prodigy.’ # 8220 ; Loner # 8221 ; [ Kurtz writes 28 ] Marlow is puting on the deck of the soft-shell clam at the cardinal station when he over hears spots and pieces of a conversation between the uncle and the director. From what Marlow can decode they are talking of Kurtz. The uncle feels that if Kurtz is without company possibly the clime will kill him. The director says he is entirely, because he sent back his and helper and a note. The note stated he would instead be without anyone so the incompetent people the cardinal station seemed to be able to save. Quote: # 8216 ; I had instead be entirely than have the sort of work forces you can dispose of with me. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Architect # 8221 ; [ Manager to uncle 29 ] Marlow is listen ining on the uncle and director # 8217 ; s conniving and fallacious disregard of Kurtz. Kurtz # 8217 ; s ideals and ends for the Congo bothered the director. The director quotes Kurtz. Kurtz wanted to convey civilisation to the uncivilized through the usage of the Stationss. He didn # 8217 ; Ts have but a 2nd idea of the economic net income when he foremost arrived in the Congo. This parallels with Marlow # 8217 ; s moral purpose for the indigens to hold a better life with engineering. The Stationss should be enlightenment for the indigens to do them existent people and better their life conditions. The Stationss were more like oppressors of the indigens than health professionals. Kurtz wanted a bequest of good purposes personified through the Stationss. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; Each station should be like a beacon on the route towards better things, a centre for trade of class, but besides for humanising, be ttering, instructing. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Avant-garde # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders 43 ] After the soft-shell clam is attacked and the steersman is dead, an epiphany comes to Marlow. He may neer talk to Kurtz for certainly he must be dead. Through all the descriptions of Kurtz an image is non what comes to Marlow, it is Kurtz voice. Marlow # 8217 ; s first feeling of Kurtz is his voice. Kurtz voice is stalking and dominant in Marlow # 8217 ; s head. The presentation of a voice by Kurtz gives him the first control over Marlow # 8217 ; s inner ego. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; The adult male presented himself as a voice. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Fanatic # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders 44 ] Marlow thinks Kurtz is dead. He tells the riders he would subsequently happen out he was incorrect. Marlow though he has non yet met the adult male, Kurtz, has his ideas over powered by Kurtz # 8217 ; s voice declaring his greed and ownership of everything. Kurtz # 8217 ; s is so captive on holding tusk that he steals, swaps, and connives to acquire the cherished xanthous white gold. Kurtz # 8217 ; s voice in Marlow # 8217 ; s caput gives him the feeling of the two-year-old mine syndrome. You have it, it # 8217 ; s mine. I see it, it # 8217 ; s mine. It # 8217 ; s mine, mine, and mine. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; My Intended, my tusk, my station, my river, my- # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Visionary # 8221 ; [ Russian to Marlow 50 ] Marlow has reached the inner station where he finds the Russian, who is highly devoted to Kurtz. It is no accident that Marlow meets this adult male here because Kurtz had planned it in order to hold an audience for his concluding drape. The Russian is speaking about when he and Kurtz are bivouacing in the wood and Kurtz negotiations about everything to him. Kurtz acquaints the Russian with his wisdom of life. Kurtz invokes visions of illustriousness in everyone including himself. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; He made me see things-things. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Survivor # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders 51 ] Marlow assumes that the Russian had been with Kurtz since their first brush in the campsite if the wood. This was non so Kurtz it seems that their relationship had been interrupted by events and Kurtz # 8217 ; s crazing head. Kurtz had been in the bosom of this jungle for many months without necessary supplies and commissariats. We learned this in the beginning. Kurtz had suffered though two unwellnesss and was helped by the Russian during these times. Through all the dangers that occurred to acquire to this land of ivory wealth Kurtz had managed to go on traveling nil seemed to halt him. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; He had, as he informed me proudly, managed to nurse Kurtz through two illnesses. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Conniver # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders 51 ] Marlow is talking of the Russian and the profound influence that Kurtz has had on this adult male. This was funny to Marlow because this adult male had the pleasance of speaking to Kurtz and Marlow had non, yet Marlow was deeply effected internally by the voice image of Kurtz. Quote: # 8216 ; The adult male filled his life, occupied his ideas, swayed his emotions. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Oppressor # 8221 ; [ Russian to Marlow 51 ] The Russian is stating Marlow of the clip Kurtz had wanted to hit him for his tusk. Kurtz had an compulsion with tusk and he wanted the Russian to fear him so he threatened him with bodily injury. Early in the novel we hear the brickmaker make the remark he feared nil non any adult male either. He was mentioning to Kurtz besides. The indigens feared Kurtz because they say him as a God coming in with his boom and lighting. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; He declared he would hit me unless I gave him the tusk and so cleared out of the state, # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Conformist # 8221 ; [ Russian to Marlow 52 ] The Russian said that Kurtz had suffered excessively much and he would implore him to go forth. Kurtz would hold to travel but so would take off on another tusk foray. Kurtz had conformed to the greed of the country and his ain overzealous pursuit for all the tusk and ownerships to be had from this state. Kurtz had forgot his initial ground for coming to the Congo to better the indigens. Kurtz had conformed to the native manner of life by leting them to idolize him as a God. He had given in to the darkness of hedonism. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; And he would state yes, and so would stay ; travel off on another tusk Hunt ; vanish for hebdomads ; bury himself amongst these people- # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Director # 8221 ; [ Russian to Marlow 54 ] There are work forces transporting Kurtz out on a stretcher toward the soft-shell clam and the indigens become incited to do a disturbance. Something bad is traveling to go on if Kurtz doesn # 8217 ; Ts take control of the state of affairs. The indigens feel Kurtz doesn # 8217 ; t want to go forth with Marlow and his crew because Kurtz had ordered the onslaught on the soft-shell clam. Kurtz # 8217 ; s words will convey order back to the emanation. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; now, if he does non state the right thing to them we are all done for. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Rebel # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders 61 ] Marlow has woken up to happen Kurtz has left the boat. Marlow knows he can catch him because Kurtz is on all 4s. The rub-a-dubs and chants of captivation have drawn Kurtz to the environing campsites ; they are taking control of his darkened psyche. It is rebellious of a ill adult male to go forth the safety of hope and crawl to evil. Kurtz # 8217 ; s psyche is a Rebel besides because it has become by far and off out of the norms of morality. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; this alone had beguiled his improper psyche beyond the bounds of permitted aspirations. # 8217 ; # 8220 ; Martyr # 8221 ; [ Marlow to riders 64 ] Marlow is stating of Kurtz # 8217 ; s concluding words. Upon Kurtz # 8217 ; s face Marlow sees every aspect of his character. The pride of the cause, the civilizing of the indigens, Kurtz came to the Congo to carry through. The huge control he reeled over the indigens. The subjugation of world as related with the # 8216 ; caputs on bets # 8217 ; , and the entire loss of his psyche to the barbarian universe of greed and domination. Kurtz made the ultimate forfeit for the cause his inner most light and now he shall everlastingly populate in the bosom of darkness. Quotation mark: # 8216 ; The horror! The horror! # 8217 ; Subject The Heart of Darkness is more than a retraction of a journey to the interior jungle of the Congo ; it is an intrinsic journey of the ego and immorality that lies dormant within all human psyches. Unfortunately the immorality can be expelled and used until it envelops the whole of our being. The immorality of greed for the ownership of tusk and power engulf Kurtz. He shows this with the quotation mark # 8216 ; My Intended, my tusk, my station, my river, my- # 8217 ; . When Marlow # 8217 ; s steersman dies he compares the steersman with Kurtz in the manner he was unable to contend off the steeping darkness of greed. The steersman dies in an onslaught on the soft-shell clam merely stat mis off from Kurtz # 8217 ; s cantonment. The steersman showed no restraint merely panic by opening the shutter of the wheelhouse to aimlessly hiting at the darkness of the shrub. This singular horror narrative to the interior darkness of adult male is engrossed and exploited by the physical journey t o the Congo. The quotation mark # 8216 ; to him the significance of an episode was non inside like a meat but outside, enfolding the narrative? # 8217 ; shows the point of the environing beds of the journey. The symbol of Marlow as Buddha gives penetration to an interior journey through speculation. The journey has the # 8216 ; impression of being captured by the unbelievable # 8217 ; the extreme epiphany of the # 8216 ; kernel of dreams # 8217 ; . The deeper we travel into the novel and the Congo with Marlow the closer we come to our interior immorality. When Marlow looks upon Kurtz # 8217 ; s deceasing face he sees every aspect of the interior journey. The pride of the cause, the civilizing of the indigens, Kurtz came to the Congo to carry through. The huge control Kurtz reeled over the indigens. The subjugation of world as related with the # 8216 ; caputs on bets # 8217 ; , and the entire loss of Kurtz # 8217 ; s psyche to the barbarian universe of greed and domination. Kurtz made the ultimate forfeit for the cause his inner most light and now he shall everlastingly populate in the bosom of darkness. Kurtz horror is the ultimate evil the vision of the Satan within his really life force. In the terminal of the novel the dark shadow of Kurtz and the Congo follow Marlow to Kurtz # 8217 ; s Intended, where Marlow goes against his ethical motives and lies to her about Kurtz # 8217 ; s last words. Kurtz uttered # 8216 ; the horror the horror # 8217 ; , but Marlow tells the Intended it was her name that escaped in his concluding breath. The quotation mark that incites this subject is # 8216 ; The vision seemed to come in the house with me ? like the whipping of a heart-the bosom of suppressing darkness. # 8217 ; [ 68 ]

Pompey the Great essays

Pompey the Great essays Pompey the Great (106-48 B.C.) was one of Romes most gifted generals. He supported Sulla in the Roman civil war of 100b.c. and from there went on to win battles in Spain, Sicily and Africa. He achieved lasting fame for sweeping the Mediterranean free of pirates in 67 b.c. The following year he defeated the asian tyrant MithradatesVI. His list of honnors also include be named consulship 3 times throughout his life and along with Caesar and Crassus he formed the first triumvirate. With the death of sulla in 79b.c. civil war looked imminent. When Lepidus revolted against the roman senate the immediate decree of senatus ultimatum was pasted giving pompey the powers of a dictator. Pompey defeated lepidus only to be faced with a new problem Quintus sertorius, who was general of the roman division in Spain. As more Roman troops joined his cause, he organized an alternative Roman governmentwith a senate, preatators and quaestors, but he longed to return home from exile. Many of the romans who had joined sertorius after lepidus revolt became foolishly resentful of his authority. Perpena carried out a conspiracy and murdered sertorius. He in turn was defeated and murdered by pompey, which brought the war to an end. Pompey granted citizenship to thode who had supported him and the treatment of sertouius spainish allies was to be considered fair and humane. Pompeys victory would have been doubtful without the murder of sertorius. His reputation in spain was more du e to his diplomatic ablility and organizational skill and his treatment of the spainards. A slave revolt led by a Thracian gladiator, sparticus brought embarressment to the roman senate. the situation had become dangerous enough to inspire real fear, and as a result both consuls were sent to deal with what was considered a major war and a most difficult one to fight. Both consuls were defeated and M. ...

Strategic change and quality improvement Assignment

Strategic change and quality improvement - Assignment Example 9-10). In a study conducted by Codispoti, Douglas, McCallister, & Zuniga (2004), the use of multidisciplinary teams evidently improved patient care through: improved satisfaction and management of patients; establishment of collaborative teamwork; forging effective team communication; enforcing regular patient monitoring and follow-up; and use of electronic records or other improved patient care systems (Codispoti, Douglas, McCallister, & Zuniga, 2004, p. 201). Still, in another discourse, the use of multidisciplinary teams to improve primary care was also found to be effective (Cote, et al., 2002). In this regard, the current discourse hereby aims to propose the implementation of using multidisciplinary teams in the health care setting. The paper would initially present the rationale for the proposed change; prior to detailing the benefits that the change could generate for the health care institution. Likewise, the group and members who should initiate or lead in the proposed chang e process would be determined and presented in terms of their significant contribution to the recommended transformation. A proposed timeline would also be structured, in conjunction with an evaluation process which aims to determine the gauge or measure for the proposed change’s success. ... Thus, it could be deduced that the symptoms that were initially relayed were addressed; but not comprehensively to encompass other possible avenues for recurrence or deterioration of health conditions.
